CONTENT SUMMARY

This work looks at the controversial debate on the meaning and purpose of education and the relationship between education, language, culture and development. It also explores some of the burning educational issues in Nigeria. Some of which are (though not exhausted);

  1. the Nigerian government's policy on education and its effects on the country's natural languages;
  2. partnership in curriculum development and planning;
  3. educational corruption;
  4. gender and geographical inequalities in education;
In view of the above-mentioned subject matter, the work is divided into five major chapters. A more subject-related introduction is made at the beginning of each chapter and each chapter is written in a different format.

While Chapter 1 deals with the universal debate on the meaning and purpose of education, Chapter2 and 4 focus mainly on a relatively small geographical entity, the Igbo_land or Igbo nation. This is the area where the author concentrated his studies on educational corruption and language in education. Ideas raised in these two chapters are, nonetheless, relevant to other societies. Chapter 3 discusses partnership in curriculum planning and Chapter 5 the changing nature of gender and geographical inequalities in education in Nigeria since 1945.

This book is very relevant and expedient at this time. Nigeria is being described in international circles as the second most corrupt country in the world. The author's aim is to formulate a framework for restoring the dignity of our educational institutions. This he appears to have achieved in this work. Politicians, policy-makers and scholars, in fact every Nigerian would benefit enormously from the contents of this work.
