CONTENT SUMMARY
Peter Amadi has successfully demonstrate how bribery and corruption contribute most to the erosion and abuse of human right, resulting in avoidable inefficient management of the political, social, educational and economic sectors in Africa nations(Pg.1). Thus, acts of individual who engage in bribery and corruption result in poverty and human degradation. Paradoxically, the perpetrators do not know that their actions lead to economic deprivation and denial of human rights of their fellow citizens, as demonstrated in the following excerpt:
when an African Government Officer embezzles money meant to build rural hospital, the hospital is not built. Consequently, many rural peasants who farm everyday are not treated when illness like malaria and dysentery afflict them. So, the rural farmers are unable to farm and feed themselves. This results in poverty(Pg.2)
Many other negative acts- such as denial of social services, embezzlement of salaries, vote-rigging, etc .contribute to the destruction of society.
Amadi has laboured quite diligently to show how our daily individual actions impacts our society, including ourselves and generations unborn. When he talks of human rights, it is not the narrow sense of political oppression which is often overt. Rather it is in terms of the total areas of human experience. In his view, the individual who undermines people's human rights may not intend to do so, and may not know that he is culpable. He/she often acts out of ignorance, which is what the author has laboured to eliminate by teaching and orienting the youth towards good citizenship, thus making them capable of dealing with issues concerning human rights, environment, conflict, poverty and justice.
The book is organised to facilitate learning and understanding of values. Models, supported by drawings, are used to visualize relevant concepts, making it possible for the reader to adsorb and internalize otherwise abstract ideas. Discussion and dialogue, especially in line with Socratic method, are emphasized because they involve careful listening, questioning and thinking, which awaken intellectual excitement and improve performance, thus adding depth and meaning to learning.
Petadist Human Rights Education Curriculum For Africa is a major contribution to our efforts to build a peaceful and stable society, devoid of injustice and oppression, through propagation of humane and altuistic values. It deserves attention from all of us.
